Bamboo

In 2005, Cabiokid was awarded for its Bamboo Engineering Methods and Building Uses project (BEMBU) by the Ford motors environmental awards.

Since then, Cabiokid continued experimenting with bamboo products and crafts.

More recently we engaged in the construction of a Learning Resource Center at the premises of a local school.

BEMBU project kicks-off

Bamboo is an abundant, fast growing, but poorly valued natural resource.

This encouraged Cabiokid to set up concrete examples of bamboo engineering that may help fuel its future use as a renewable energy source.

The BEMBU project showcases bamboo as a prime and relevant construction material for establishing sustainable human habitats.

The site is a free supermarket demonstrating the different uses of bamboo as a prime engineering material.

The project will focus on bamboo -cement, -buildings and -engineering, with a specific concern for its life span and durabiltiy.

The project will also continue to plant different species of bamboo in order to show the life cycle of planting, harvesting, treatment, uses and post maintenance.

Sta. Rita LRC

Learning Resource Center

A Learning Resource Center (LRC) has been constructed within the premises of Sta Rita elementary school.

The Learning Resource Center project aims to make the concepts of sustainable development and permaculture visible and real for a wider audience. The LRC is also a way to blend informal learning with the formal teachings at the school.

By setting up a LRC that reflects the Filipino ingenuity and craftsmanship, we tried to give the school an eye catcher. The center was made of local materials in a blend of modern and proven technologies. The LRC is part of the larger school grounds and integrates learning on all levels. It is a place to study and observe nature and to learn to adapt natural systems in our own daily life.

LRC Turnover

The launching and official opening of the LRC took place last July 2007.

Top officials of the Department of Education and from the Local Government units of Cabiao in the Province of Nueva Ecija, witnessed the program and supported the project.

Also some principals of other schools were present. They showed great interested in permaculture and would like to adapt its principles in their school. In the future, they might make a cooperation with Cabiokid.

International work camp

The international work camp held last July 7-27, 2007 in coordination with Bouworde, a Belgian organization, was a great success. Fourteen young enthusiastic Belgians, together with their Filipino counterparts, worked on the rehabilitation of a very old Home Economics building.

The building has been ecologically transformed. The roof was made of biological materials such as bamboo and cogon combined with galvanized iron. Animals and flowers were painted on the walls.

During their very short stay, they were also able to help in the preparatory works for the construction of a workshop cum lodging house in the Cabiokid permaculture farm.

Great impact has been achieved through the solidarity project: it developed friendship and camaraderie and it opened the eyes of the host community. It showed them that, even in short period, actions can be done that could make a difference.

The 2nd international work camp

A second international work camp held last July 15-August 13, 2008 in coordination with Bouworde, a Belgian organization offering young adults an alternative stay at the country. Twelve young enthusiastic Belgians, together with their Filipino counterparts, worked on an EKO palas at the local elementary school in barangay Palasinan, Cabiao, Nueva Ecija. The old dilapidated building was transformed into a multi-purpose facility and accordingly redesigned with its roof and surroundings a combination of bamboo, cogon and galvanized iron.

During their short stay, they were also able to learn about the ins and outs of working with bamboo and other natural materials. These skills came in handy when the team traveled for the second part of the work camp to barangay San Isidro, Busuanga, Palawan where they assisted in the construction of tourism facilities for the local organisation of Indigenous people’s.

Both projects created a great impact and a lasting solidarity among the host community; working together developed friendship and camaraderie and opened the eyes of the local beneficiaries. It showed them that, even in short period, actions can be done that could make a difference.
